Living With HP’s EliteBoard G1a: The PC-in-a-Keyboard Concept Is Intriguing, But I'll Stick With My Laptop

Summary

The HP EliteBoard G1a is a full-fledged desktop PC built into a keyboard using a Ryzen mobile CPU, reviving a Commodore 64-style form factor for modern computing. While the concept is intriguing and doesn't run excessively hot, reviewers question whether the all-in-one keyboard design solves a real problem for most users compared to traditional laptops.

Pros

  • ✓Complete PC hidden within keyboard, eliminating need for separate tower
  • ✓Revives retro computing concept with modern performance
  • ✓Thermal management effective despite compact design

Cons

  • ✕Solves a niche problem most users don't have
  • ✕Less practical than traditional laptops for portable computing
  • ✕Dull, uninspiring aesthetic
