By introducing an internal display and a camera sensor into the optical path, the AX Visio forces you to look at a screen representation of the subject. If you are a tech enthusiast who wants to own the newest, most complex gadget, there is a certain novelty in the AX Visio. It is a marvel of engineering to fit a camera, an NPU, and an OLED display into a chassis that still functions as a binocular. But for anyone who actually enjoys birding or wildlife observation, the device is a distraction.

The best optical gear disappears. You pick it up, you focus, and you see. When a device becomes a piece of software that requires charging cables and periodic updates, it is no longer an optical tool—it is just another screen we’ve tethered to our faces. I would much rather spend my time learning to identify birds the old-fashioned way, through patience and study, than by waiting for an NPU to render a text box over my view. Sometimes, the most high-tech solution is simply to leave the computer at home.
